Welcoming Dr. Román as Our New Chancellor

May 8, 2025

By Juliet Hidalgo

Dear Colleagues,

I’m thrilled to share that the Board of Trustees has officially appointed Dr. Alberto J. Román as the Chancellor of the Los Angeles Community College District, following yesterday’s unanimous vote at our Board meeting.

Many of you already know Dr. Román—not only from his time as President of East Los Angeles College, but also from his recent service as our Interim Chancellor.  His deep commitment to our mission has always been clear. He leads with heart, purpose, and a strong belief in the power of education to transform lives—something he knows from personal experience.

“As an immigrant and first-generation college graduate, I’ve experienced firsthand the power education has to transform lives, and I’m honored to champion accessible education through my appointment as Chancellor of LACCD,” Dr. Román said. “I carry the District’s mission to heart—ensuring that every student, regardless of background, has access to education and the opportunity to succeed.”

Dr. Román brings over two decades of experience in higher education and an unwavering focus on equity, access, and student-centered leadership.  He has served in nearly every role in our field—from classified staff to faculty to college president. At East Los Angeles College, he expanded enrollment and student support services, especially for those from historically underserved communities.

He also brings strong academic credentials: a doctorate and master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of La Verne, and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from UC Riverside. His educational journey informs the work he does every day and reinforces his deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing our students.

We’re incredibly fortunate to have someone with Dr. Román’s vision, experience, and values leading our District at this important moment. Please join me in congratulating him on this well-deserved appointment—and in continuing the work we all care so deeply about.

Warmly,

Kelsey
