PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT CENTER OF EXCELLENCE (COE)
Economic and workforce development is a core mission of the California Community
Colleges. The Performance Improvement Center for Excellence is an initiative
created by the State Chancellor's office to assist the colleges to enhance
their ability to meet the economic and workforce development needs of their
respective communities. The initiative is working toward branding the community
colleges as a premier provider of customized training to advance California's
workforce.
Examples of activities that the COE can provide:
- Industry Scanning
- Partnership Development
- Regional and Statewide Marketing
An example of a project, which illustrates this model, is the Health Training
Consortium. Based on existing research from the health community, a need
was identified to bring together hospitals and non-profit organizations
in order to provide on-going, low-cost training to their employees. Los
Angeles
Valley College was identified to work with several local hospitals and
organizations to develop curriculum for this population. Several classes
have been delivered
and plans are in development to expand the consortium regionally. The Consortium
is identifying additional partners such as the Hospital Association of
Southern California, which could facilitate expanding the program countywide.
Curriculum
will be shared amongst colleges identified to participate in the consortium.
These projects not only create visibility and awareness of our system’s
workforce development capabilities but also provide an on-going forum for
college and industry exchange.
