Program Overview
At West Los Angeles College CalWORKs is a component of the Workforce Development Center, which designed to meet the needs of the unemployed, underemployed and those, seeking change in career direction through college courses. The Center provides a supportive environment for new and first time college students in addition to students who are re-entering. The college offers basic skills, English as a Second Language, GED preparation, vocational preparation, and transfer education programs.

Program Benefit
Students can participate in an array of programs too improve their opportunities for employment and educational advancement. Many of our students receive basic skills in college classes and laboratories with the encouragement of our experienced faculty. The Center staff believes that preparation is the foundation for success in classes and success in the workplace. To assist students in achieving their goals, the Center coordinates activities with the resources of the college to provide:

  • Professional counseling and advisemen
  • Child care services
  • Financial Aid
  • Tutoring
  • Student support group
  • Work-study and internships
  • Job search assistance
  • Mentoring and personal life skills training
  • GED space preparation
  • Basic education in small groups an computer-assisted classes
  • Referral to community services
  • Job fairs

In addition to CalWORKs, the Workforce Development Center programs include:

  • AmeriCorps Literacy Program
  • California Employment Development Department
  • Child care Training Program
  • Community Partnerships, supporting basic skills development and employment advancement
  • Educational Opportunity Center
  • Talent Search
  • Teaching and Reading Development Partnerships for Careers in Teaching

The college provides programs designed to prepare students for entry-level employment and a foundation for transfer to upper division colleges in the future. Work-study experiences include on-campus opportunities to develop employment sustainability.
