Just south of the Los Angeles Civic Center in the heart
of the city, Los Angeles Trade-Technical College has
been offering training and vocational preparation for
over 75 years. Since the GAIN program’s arrival
in 1989 and the inception of CalWORKs in 1998, state-of-the-art
educational options have been provided to GAIN/CalWORKs
students. Offering the widest array of program has provided
the path to employment for thousands of individual on
TANF. Students may choose form Basic Skills. Concurrent
Training, and Vocational Programs:
Basic Skills
At Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, a team of instructors,
learning skills instructional assistants and tutors
assist students with basic skills/ESL coursework. Open
entry/open exit, individualized programs are available
so that the students can work at their own pace. Our
computer lab is constantly evolving to incorporate
current trends in educational delivery for the nontraditional
student. The more traditional student has access to
formal lecture courses along with team support on their
learning path.

Students who are able to begin short-term study in vocational
fields also enroll in basic skills. This tandem approach
allows the students the educational support they need
while beginning studies in their field of choice.

The GAIN/CalWORKs program offers short-term, vocational
options with some open-entry/open-exit courses. The
following prepare students for the workforce and entrée

Career Opportunities
CalWORKs provides affective career planning, assessments,
interpretation, and guidance. The program assists students
with job development through employability workshops.
We also provide work-study, work experience and community
service activities to prepare the student for employment
as they transition to self-sufficiency.
