Los Angeles Mission College
(LAMC) is located in northeast corner of the San Fernando
Valley, which includes the communities
of Sylmar, San Fernando, Pacoima, Panorama City, Mission
Hills, Sunland, Tujunga, and Granada Hills. The College’s
mission statement is to provide a range of programs and
services that “meet the changing needs of people
in the San Fernando Valley.”
For
the past twenty-five years, LAMC has provided vocational
training and assisted participants in transitioning from
dependency to self-sufficiency. The CalWORKs program continues
this tradition by providing personal and career counseling
and comprehensive support services for participants as
they train for the workforce. The support services assist
students in completing their educational programs, complying
with state work participation requirements and acquiring
employment. Students establish a career path through continued
training and education, which leads to increased income.
Instructional
and training programs have been developed
to match the changing needs of business and industry. Students
may choose form a number of short-term occupational certificates
and skill award programs. CalWORKs helps students to improve
their English skills by providing ESL classes and bilingual
vocational programs, such as Culinary Arts and Home Health
Care. Also, students have the option of completing the
GED at their own pace.
The following services are provided to CalWORKs students:
- Academic, career and personal counseling
- Childcare available
at the LAMC Child Development Center and at off-campus
licensed childcare providers
- On and off-campus work-study,
which allows students the opportunity to meet the work
requirements while attending
a community college and obtaining valuable work experience.
In many cases, the work-study leads to permanent
employment.
- Job development and placement service
- On-campus academic
support services, such as tutoring
- Computer labs with
specialized software
- Referrals to community resources
In addition, LAMC collaborates
wit DPSS, Maximus LA-GAIN, WorkSource California, Family
Development Network, and
Childcare Agencies and the college’s Family Development
Network. These partnerships provide students an avenue
for additional services and personal growth.
