Los Angeles
Harbor College provides education and training
services designed to prepare Temporary Assistance to
Needy Families (TANF) recipients for occupational skills
that lead to unsubsidized employment. The intent of the
Los Angeles Harbor College CalWORKs program is to offer
courses and support services, such as basic skills and
childcare. These programs and services facilitate the
success of the participants attending Los Angeles Harbor
College in their transition into the workforce.
The
CalWORKs office at the Los Angeles Harbor College
provides a variety of programs and services to eligible
welfare participants. Eligible participants may also
qualify for other supportive services available on campus.
Student are referred from the Department of Public Social
Services (DPSS) to participate in 32 hours (for single
participates) and 35 hours (for married participants)
of educational activities and are provided with ancillary
funds to cover books and supplies, childcare and transportation
expenses.
Services
provided by the CalWORKs office at Los Angeles
Harbor College include:
- Case Management
is provided through counseling, advocacy on behalf
of students, verification of education
and training for various agencies, completion of forms
needed by DPSS, as well as providing resources and
referral information from within the community.
- A counselor
offers academic planning and counseling which
includes a college placement test and assessment in
order to enroll the student in appropriate classes for study.
- Books and supplies
- Childcare, transportation and referrals
- Workplace
skills training
Specialized
programs developed for CalWORKs include:
- English as a Second Language
- Adult Basic Education
- General Education Development
- Remedial Education course
- Vocational Training
Students are encouraged to use all campus resources
to support their educational programs. CalWORKs students
qualify for financial aid including fee waivers. Some
students may also be eligible for work-study grants and
federal scholarships. Cooperative Agencies Resources
for Education is a student support program that provides
assistance for low-income single parents to succeed in
reaching their educational goals.
Los
Angeles Harbor College is prepared to meet the educational
needs of the CalWORKs program by offering instructional
programs enabling students to obtain Occupational Career
Certificates, Skills Certificates and Associate Degrees.
Whether the student is referred by DPSS of self-initiated,
the CalWORKs program can be the beginning of expanding
employment opportunities, in addition to a lifetime learning
and personal growth.
