California Work Opportunities and Responsibilities to Kids
(CalWORKs) is a Welfare-to-Work program that helps Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) participants become successfully employed. In order to continue receiving cash aid, participants need to be involved in 32/35 hours per week of work/school participation and receive 18 to 24 months of education/training in preparation for employment. CalWORKs students may choose from a variety of traditional vocational certificate programs in addition to non-credit educational programs.

Benefits for Students:

  • Direct case management assistance and referrals
  • Academic counseling and career guidance
  • GED/English Skills
  • Opportunity for short-term training
  • Transportation, books, and childcare
  • Access to computers/job search programs
  • Networking and job development
  • Work opportunities related to students’ fields of study

Childcare Services
Child Care Services are available on campus for pre-school and school-age children. The hours of service are flexible so that they meet student needs. Parents who have special childcare needs can benefit from referrals to licensed family daycare and/or licensed facilities.

Work Study Opportunities
CalWORKs participants are eligible for on and off-campus work study positions, such as office administration, health care, childcare, and administration of justice, which are related to their field of study. Work-study is designed to provide CalWORKs students an opportunity to advance towards their career goals. Businesses provide valuable hands-on experience and on-the-job training, which is beneficial to students and employers.

Job/Career Development
The Job Development office provides services to assist students with searching, obtaining, and keeping a job. Students attend a Career and Soft Skills Enhancement workshop, which prepares them for the workplace. They are assisted in resume preparation and are coached on interview skills. In addition, the following services are available:

  • One-on-one career counseling
  • Workshops/seminars on career information
  • Computer-based training/job search programs
  • Interactive interview simulations
