New Service Credit Purchase Option - Non-Qualified (Air Time) Service

Service Credit Purchase Options

Last Update: 10-23-2003

As a result of recent legislation (A.B. 719) that becomes effective January 1, 2004, you can purchase additional service credit you can use toward retirement. This additional service credit, frequently referred to as “Air Time” or “Non-Qualified Service” is not based on actual employment with a CalPERS employer.

Since this new service credit option is not available until January 1, 2004, you’ll need to be eligible and make your election after that date. Cost calculations and election information will not be provided until after January 1st.

In the meantime, you can review some of the FAQs that members are already asking us. Be sure to check back here often, since we’ll be updating this information as issues are resolved and new questions are received.

We’re also working on adding this service credit purchase option to our Service Credit Cost Estimator by the end of the year. You’ll then be able to use this online service to get an idea of how much this type of purchase would cost you.
