The 30,000 instructors who comprise
the faculty of the California Community Colleges have the
most challenging and rewarding jobs in all of higher education.
The unique mission of California's community colleges is
to provide degree and certificate instruction to students
preparing to transfer to 4-year baccalaureate programs,
to provide technical and vocational instruction to students
with more immediate career plans, while also giving flexibility
in responding to instructional needs of local communities
and life-long learning for adults.
The Los Angeles Community College
District, comprised of nine area community colleges, offers
Project MATCH as a method to prepare and recruit a diverse Community
College faculty who are sensitive to the needs of the students
it serves. The program assumes that applicants have already
attained a level of expertise in the subject area to which
they will be assigned as interns.
The Project MATCH Internship is a multi-component program comprised of the components below. All components of the program are mandatory. Failure to attend the Summer Institute, two follow-up workshops, special events and other scheduled mandatory meetings and internship assignments at the college may result in exclusion from the program.
The mandatory elements of the program include all of the following:
- An introductory session held on one Saturday in May prior to the Summer Institute.
- The Summer Institute, held between June and August, designed to orient the intern to their community college. Summer Institute classes are scheduled on weeknights between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm.
- Two follow-up workshops held on one Saturday during the months of October and December.
- The end of year culmination and award event held during an evening in December before the end of the Fall semester.
Prior to the Fall semester, interns will be assigned by the Coordinator to work with a mentor who is a Los Angeles Community College District classroom instructor, counselor or librarian. It the mentor is a classroom instructor, the intern will be assigned to work with the mentor to teach a 3-unit class (3 hours per week on consecutive weeks throughout the semester). If the mentor is a counselor or librarian, the intern will be assigned to the equivalent non-classroom assignment. Weekday and evening opportunities are available Monday through Thursday only (no Friday or weekend assignments), and the assignment will take place at one of the nine colleges in the District.
This program is not affiliated with professional graduate school programs for teacher training. Campus selection and mentor matching is at the sole discretion of the District and is implemented by the Coordinator.
The terms of the assignment provide a stipend not to exceed $800 for each intern. The stipend is conditional on attending all mandatory events and all Fall semester classes.
