Purpose of the Program

The 30,000 instructors who comprise the faculty of the California Community Colleges have the most challenging and rewarding jobs in all of higher education. The unique mission of California's community colleges is to provide degree and certificate instruction to students preparing to transfer to 4-year baccalaureate programs, to provide technical and vocational instruction to students with more immediate career plans, while also giving flexibility in responding to instructional needs of local communities and life-long learning for adults.

The Los Angeles Community College District, comprised of nine area community colleges, offers Project MATCH as a method to prepare a diverse Community College faculty who are sensitive to the needs of the students it serves. The program assumes that applicants have already attained a level of expertise in the subject area to which they will be assigned as interns. The summer institute will be held sometime between June and August with classes scheduled during evening hours.

Program Commitment

What can interns expect if selected for the program?

Interns will be assigned to work with a Los Angeles Community College District instructor to teach a 3-unit class during the Fall semester. Day, evening, or Saturday opportunities may be available. Instruction will take place at one of the nine colleges of the District. This program is not affiliated with professional graduate school programs for teacher training.

There will be several seminars to assist interns to prepare for and evaluate their teaching. The Summer Institute will be held sometime between June and August and is designed to orient the intern to community college teaching. The Summer Institute classes will be scheduled during evening hours.

Two follow up workshops will be held on a Saturday sometime in October and December.

All components of the program are mandatory. Failure to attend the Summer Institute, two follow up workshops and teaching assignment at the college may results in exclusion from the program.

Compensation

The terms of the assignment provide a stipend not to exceed $800 for each intern. The stipend is conditional on attending all classes during the Fall semester.
