Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa administered the oath of office to Board members Kelly Candaele and Michael D. Waxman at their July 6, 2005 installation ceremony. Assemblyman Paul Koretz administered the oath to Trustee Nancy Pearlman. Each Board member is elected at-large and serves for a four-year term.

Kelly G.Candaele, the past president of the Board of Trustees was first elected to the Board in 1997; Mr. Waxman was first elected in 2001.

The Board elected Trustee Sylvia Scott-Hayes President; Michael D. Waxman as Vice-President. They will serve in these positions for one year.

As a former community college student Mayor Villaraigosa spoke about the importance of community colleges to his career and to the future workforce of Los Angeles. Praising the LACCD Board as the “most progressive Board of Trustees anywhere in the country,” the Mayor envisioned a strong partnership between the Los Angeles Community College District and the City of Los Angeles. “The community colleges are key in producing workers trained in key sectors of our new global economy,” he said.

The July 6 Board Meeting was the first for Darroch “Rocky” Young as Chancellor of the nine-college Los Angeles Community College District. Prior to July 1, 2005, he served as Senior Vice Chancellor of the LACCD for 18 months and as President of Pierce College for five years. He is replacing Chancellor Peter Landsberger, who will be acting Senior Vice Chancellor through August.
