At their first Board meeting of
the new year on July 9, 2003, the Los Angeles Community
College District Board of Trustees unanimously elected
Mona Field to the office of Board President. Ms. Field,
and three other incumbent trustees, Georgia Mercer, Warren
T. Furutani and Sylvia Scott-Hayes took the oath of office
administered earlier in the day by Mayor James Hahn. Ms.
Mercer was elected Vice President.
All four trustees were originally
elected to the Board in 1999. It was during their first
term that the District
passed Proposition A, a $1.245 billion modernization and
renovation bond measure and Proposition AA, a $980 million
bond measure to build out the nine colleges’ master
plans.
"It is an honor to be elected
by my colleagues to serve as president of the Los Angeles
Community College
District during these very difficult times," said
Ms. Field, a professor of Political Science and Sociology
at Glendale Community College. "Working together,
I am confident this Board can create solutions to most
effectively serve our students and our communities."
Mona Field is Vice President of California Federation
of Teachers. She has been President, Glendale College Guild,
Local 2276; Treasurer, Southland Faculty Alliance, Steering
Committee, California Studies Association; and served as
a member of the Board of Governors of the Faculty Association
of the California Community Colleges. A faculty member
at Glendale Community College since 1982, Ms. Field teaches
courses in American Political Ideals, California Government,
Introduction to Sociology, Introduction to Community Volunteerism
and Introduction to Social Science. She is a prolific writer
on topics relating to education and government, including
a best-selling college textbook: California Government
and Politics Today.
Georgia Mercer, the new Vice
President, was President of the Board from July 2000
- June 2001. She is a member
of the statewide California Community College Trustee Board.

The Los Community College District is one of the largest
community college districts in the world. It consists of
nine colleges: Los Angeles City College, East Los Angeles
College, Los Angeles Harbor College, Los Angeles Mission
College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Pierce College,
Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, Los Angeles Valley
College and West Los Angeles College. It currently educates
130,000 students in transfer, vocational education and
life-long learning programs. The District covers an area
of more than 882 square miles.
