At their first Board meeting of the new year on July 9, 2003, the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees unanimously elected Mona Field to the office of Board President. Ms. Field, and three other incumbent trustees, Georgia Mercer, Warren T. Furutani and Sylvia Scott-Hayes took the oath of office administered earlier in the day by Mayor James Hahn. Ms. Mercer was elected Vice President.

All four trustees were originally elected to the Board in 1999. It was during their first term that the District passed Proposition A, a $1.245 billion modernization and renovation bond measure and Proposition AA, a $980 million bond measure to build out the nine colleges’ master plans.

"It is an honor to be elected by my colleagues to serve as president of the Los Angeles Community College District during these very difficult times," said Ms. Field, a professor of Political Science and Sociology at Glendale Community College. "Working together, I am confident this Board can create solutions to most effectively serve our students and our communities."

Mona Field is Vice President of California Federation of Teachers. She has been President, Glendale College Guild, Local 2276; Treasurer, Southland Faculty Alliance, Steering Committee, California Studies Association; and served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Faculty Association of the California Community Colleges. A faculty member at Glendale Community College since 1982, Ms. Field teaches courses in American Political Ideals, California Government, Introduction to Sociology, Introduction to Community Volunteerism and Introduction to Social Science. She is a prolific writer on topics relating to education and government, including a best-selling college textbook: California Government and Politics Today.

Georgia Mercer, the new Vice President, was President of the Board from July 2000 - June 2001. She is a member of the statewide California Community College Trustee Board. "I am pleased to serve as Vice President of the Board. These challenging times ahead will require real leadership. Our outstanding Board is ready to fight for our students."
