LOS ANGELES –Congressman Xavier Becerra secured $500,000 for the creation of a transit plaza at the corner of Grand Ave. and Washington Blvd., immediately across the street from Los Angeles Trade-Tech College, in the 2004-2005 federal budget. Today, flanked by college President Dr. Daniel Castro, L.A. Community Colleges Chancellor Dr. Peter Landsberger, and College Trustee Georgia Mercer, Becerra unveiled artists’ renderings of what the new transit plaza will look like when built.
“Congressman Becerra is a champion for community college students,” said Landsberger. “His support has been crucial in funding this important transit station.”
The earmarked federal funding will augment funding from the Community Colleges to create a new, pedestrian-accessible transit plaza across the street from Trade-Tech. The plaza will connect the existing Blue Line light rail along Washington Blvd. with bus lines, and will improve pedestrian access to all public transit options. The entire project will cost $3 million.
“Becerra knows how important this transit plaza is for Trade-Tech students,” said Trade-Tech President Dr. Daniel Castro. “We thank him for his dedication to providing safe, accessible public transportation for our students who rely on it every day.”
Propositions A and AA, two bond measures overwhelmingly approved by Los Angeles voters, provide $2.2 billion for extensive new construction and renovation at each of the nine Los Angeles Community Colleges. With funding from bond measures Propositions A and AA, Los Angeles Trade-Technical College (Trade-Tech) is working on a $230 million renovation of the campus. In addition to modernizing the more than 40-year old campus, Trade-Tech will renovate their library, gymnasium, Construction Technology building, Auto/Metal building, Art and Culinary Arts building, and Math & Science building. The South end of Trade-Tech’s campus will be completely revitalized with two signature buildings, which will house classroom and administrative space.
