The Riverside Community College Board of Trustees today named Daniel Castro, Ph.D., as the new president of Riverside City College, one of three campuses within the Riverside Community College District (RCCD). Dr. Castro was selected after an extensive search, which attracted candidates from throughout the country.
"Dr. Castro is the right person at the right time for the Riverside Campus," said Salvatore G. Rotella, chancellor of RCCD. "He has skills in working with faculty and students that will be invaluable as we move Riverside and the other two campuses to a new multi-college system structure. During his 15 years with the Los Angeles community colleges, he has proven to be an innovative leader committed to providing exceptional learning opportunities to the community. I am very pleased that he has chosen to bring his talents here."
Dr. Castro was President of Los Angeles Trade-Technical College for the past five years. Prior to assuming the presidency at LA Trade-Tech, he was the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Los Angeles Mission College.
As President of Riverside City College, Dr. Castro joins RCCD at a critical time in the college system's history. Last year, voters approved a district-wide $350 million bond measure to fund capital construction projects and development at RCCD campuses and education centers. Measure C-funded projects already are underway on the Riverside Campus and several additional modernization, renovation and new construction projects are envisioned over the next 10-15 years to meet projected enrollment demands and support the development of new programs.
As president of Riverside City College, Dr. Castro will be the first Latino to head a campus in the district. He is a graduate of East Los Angeles College and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara, his master's degree from Occidental College, and his Ph.D. from Union Graduate School in Ohio.
At LA Trade-Tech, Dr. Castro maintained an active involvement in the community, serving as past president and member on the Board of Directors of the Rose Bowl Operating Company, the Los Angeles Sports Council, the National Community College Hispanic Council, and California State Summer School for the Arts.
Dr. Castro will assume his new position this summer.
