WAXMAN NAMED LACCD BOARD OF TRUSTEE PRESIDENT

Trustee Michael Waxman PhotoAt its July 12, 2006 meeting, the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees elected new officers. Trustee Michael D. Waxman was elected President; Sylvia Scott-Hayes was elected Vice -President.

Los Angeles voters first elected Michael D. Waxman to the Los Angeles Community College District Board in 2001 and he was elected for a second four-year term in 2005. He served as Vice President of the Board from July 2005- June 2006. He is also chair of the Board’s External Relations Committee which is responsible for providing policy support in the area public relations, marketing and resource development.

“It’s truly an honor to serve as president of this Board,” said Mr. Waxman. “I want to maintain the successful efforts of the past in continuing to serve our colleges, the taxpayers and the voters of Los Angeles.”

As president, Mr. Waxman plans to focus on increasing enrollment at all nine colleges, improving student success rates, and continuing to move forward with the building programs funded by Propositions A and AA.

Mr. Waxman is the president of Waxman Consulting, a firm that specializes in delivering comprehensive and integrated programs for clients in the areas of public affairs, strategic communications and community relations.

In the community, Mr. Waxman serves on the Board of Directors of the Anti-Defamation League’s Pacific Southwest Region and is a past chairman of the board of Centro C.H.A., Long Beach’s Community Hispanic Association.

Mr. Waxman received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, with a minor in Near Eastern Judaic Studies, from Brandeis University. He is married to Marjorie Resnick.

Trustee Sylvia Scott-Hayes served as president of the Board from July 2005-June 2006.
She oversaw the major construction on each campus funded by the voter approved Propositions A and AA and launched a pioneering initiative on student success.

The Los Angeles Community College District is one of the largest community college districts in the world; serving more than 130,000 students in 9 colleges spread throughout 36 cities in the greater Los Angeles area.
