Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa issued the oath of office to four members of the Los

Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees on Wednesday July 11, 2007 in the Board Room of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD).

Mona Field, Warren T. Furutani, Georgia L. Mercer and Sylvia Scott-Hayes won re-election on March 6, 2007.  Mercer, who has served as trustee since 1998 and faced three challengers on the first March ballot, defeated Roy Burns in the May 15 runoff election.

The LACCD is the nation’s largest community college district, serving more than 200,000 students on nine campuses.  The district has been providing students with quality education since the doors of Los Angeles City College opened in 1929.  Nine open-enrollment institutions in the district concentrate on workforce development, re-education of the local workforce and transferring students to four-year universities.

District students are benefiting from master planning following the passage of Proposition A and AA Bonds.  The nine colleges are being upgraded and renovated, providing students and staff with new classroom buildings, athletic fields, parking and administrative facilities.  Environmentally friendly projects continue to transform these learning institutions into state-of-the-art colleges which will better serve our community for decades to come.
