Los Angeles…The Board of Trustees
of the Los Angeles Community College District unanimously
appointed Miguel Santiago to fill the Board seat left vacant
by Warren T. Furutani, who recently resigned after his
election to the California State Assembly.
The Board heard presentations from more than 25 candidates
who were seeking the position.
Mr. Santiago is employed as a Special
Assistant of External Affairs for the Office of the Board
of Equalization, where he is the community and labor liaison
for Chair Judy Chu PhD. Previous to this position, he served
as Field Coordinator for the Office of Assemblymember Cindy
Montañez.
Born in 1973 in the San Fernando
Valley to immigrant parents, Mr. Santiago attended public
school and community college before transferring to the
University of California, Los Angeles where he graduated
Magna Cum Laude.
The LACCD does not have specific
geographic Trustee areas. The seven at-large Board members
each represent the entire District. Mr. Santiago will be
sworn in on April 9, 2008 and hold office until the next
Trustee elections in spring 2009. If elected, he will serve
a two-year term. In 2011, the seat will be up for election
for a full four-year term. The Board regularly meets twice
a month; each Trustee is paid $2000 monthly.
The Los Angeles Community College
District includes nine colleges. The Board sets policy
for the District; the Chancellor is the Chief Executive
Officer who is charged with the day- to-day operations
of the District and its colleges.
