SACRAMENTO –Los Angeles Valley
College won one of the annual Board of Governors (BOG) Exemplary
Program Award for their exceptional programs in the
area of career and technical education, announced California
Community Colleges Chancellor Diane Woodruff.
“The theme of this year’s
award is ‘Innovative Bridges in Career Technical
Education,’” explained Chancellor Woodruff
of the BOG award established in 1991 to recognize outstanding
community college programs. “This year’s exemplary
awards represent programs that meet a vital community need
in the area of career technical education, have high student
success rates, and can be modeled in other community colleges,” she
said.
Founded in 2004, Los Angeles Valley
College’s Early Childhood Workforce Development Program
responds to the critical need for childcare in California.
Both nationally and locally there are a large number of
parents needing childcare; in the Los Angeles area alone,
there are over 122,450 children in families where both
parents are working, and yet there are only 7,593 slots
in licensed day care facilities available. Between 2004
and 2007, LAVC trained and contributed over 500 workers
to the early childhood development industry for infant
and toddler care.
The college received a $4,000 award
from the Foundation for California Community Colleges.
The award is sponsored by the Foundation for California
Community Colleges, and recipients are chosen by a committee
made up of representatives from the state administrator
groups, students and faculty.
