(January 28, 2010) -- The Los Angeles
Community College District has received a $1 million grant
from the State of California to provide training for jobs
in the transportation and warehousing industry.
The District will use the funds to help 220 unemployed workers and those seeking
new careers in such jobs as hybrid/alternative fuel mechanics, vehicle operators,
environmental technicians and transportation managers.
The training will be provided at
five LACCD colleges -- Los Angeles Valley, Pierce, Los
Angeles Harbor, Los Angeles Trade-Technical and East Los
Angeles.
"By expanding their skills and knowledge, program participants will
have greater opportunities to find employment and a satisfying career," said
Marvin Martinez, LACCD Vice Chancellor, Economic and Workforce Development.
Teaming with the LACCD in the
training effort are such employers as Metropolitan Transit
Authority, North County Transit District, Big Blue Bus
and Performance Team.
The training funds are part of
the California Recovery Task Force's $10.7 million in federal
economic stimulus grants to help more than 2,100 unemployed
Californians prepare for occupations that are in demand
statewide.
