LA Community Colleges Host Financial Aid Workshops

Download the Press Release

Five colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) will soon host a free series of hour-long Cash for College workshops to help families fill out the CalGrant and Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms they need to complete to become eligible for college money.

Los Angeles City College is holding its workshop on Saturday, Feb. 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

One week later, on Saturday Feb. 10, East L.A. College in Monterey Park; L.A. Harbor College in Wilmington; L.A. Southwest College in South Los Angeles; and L.A. Trade Technical College near downtown will host workshops beginning at 9 a.m. starting on the hour and ending at 2 p.m.

“All high school seniors should attend a workshop because they won’t know what you qualify for unless they apply,” said LACCD Chancellor Darroch “Rocky” Young.  “Plus each student who completes the forms and evaluates the workshops is eligible to win an extra $1,000 scholarship.”

Parents and students must bring federal income tax returns, if filed; W-2 forms, pay check stubs or any records of earned income; current bank statements; and any records of investments.

“Hundreds of thousands of dollars are available each year to prospective students,” Young said. “Since so many students don’t know how easy it really is to apply for financial aid, our colleges are here to help.  Our counselors will be stationed at several of the high school sites on February 10.”

The nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District provide more than 2900 different courses serving more than 120,000 vocational education and transfer students.  Tuition is just $20 per unit.  For additional information, visit www.lacolleges.net.
