The LA City College Cubs’ 2007 South Coast Conference Championship set a college basketball record! No other college men’s program on any level or other sanctioning body (community college, NAIA, or NCAA) has ever won 14 consecutive conference championships.
The Cubs are now in a class by themselves in stature and on the record.
Although the Cubs concluded their season on February 23 with a disappointing loss in the California Community College Men’s Basketball Regional Playoffs, their season record of 22 – 9 included winning their 14th South Coast Conference Championship.
The 2005-06 championship tied the former all-time record of 13 with Pac-10 power UCLA. The Bruins’ amazing run of championships was between 1966 and 1979. Nine of those titles came under Hall of Fame Coach John Wooden.
The Cubs’ championship is distinguished from UCLA in that four different coaches participated in UCLA’s conference titles, while the Cubs have been under the guidance of head coach Mike Miller throughout their incredible streak. Miller has won more than 500 games as head basketball coach at City College.
