Robert Isomoto's PhotoJuly 20, 2006, Monterey Park, CA.  Robert “Bob” Isomoto, Vice-President of Administrative Services has been appointed as Interim-President of East Los Angeles College. Isomoto will occupy the position for one year while current President Ernest H. Moreno serves in a similar capacity at Los Angeles Mission College.

The new Interim-President brings more than 30 years of community college experience to his new position. Isomoto said “the community college system offers a second chance to individuals who have been traditionally denied access to higher education.” In his three decades at East Los Angeles College, Isomoto has put this principle into practice as a counselor, chairperson of the counseling department, Associate Dean, Dean and Vice-President of Student Services as well as well as Vice-President of Administrative Services.  In the latter position he has been in charge of all budget allocations for the college. Bob brings a wealth of experience to his new position in that he has served in all three of the divisions within the college. These include Academic Affairs (as Coordinator of Cooperative Education) in Students Services and in Administrative Services.

In terms of his goals Isomoted noted, “I want to continue with the progress that the college has made in the past decade. I am a caretaker of this office and of the college. ELAC is a major part of the community and I want to maintain that role.” Toping the list of issues that will face Isomoto will the be maintenance of enrollment which has skyrocketed from 13,000 to more than 30,000 and continuing construction projects funded from recently passed Propositions A and AA. “We are in the midst of a complete campus makeover,” he said. “Within a decade, East will be the benchmark for community college facilities in California.”

While not guiding the college, Isomoto enjoys the outdoors.  His favorite pastimes include playing golf and camping.  He notes with enthusiasm that he has stayed in almost every campsite from Baja to Big Sur! His other passion is his fully restored two tone 1956 Chevrolet four-door hardtop.  He can be occasionally driving his classic around campus.

ELAC is the largest of the nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD).  The college serves approximately 30,000 students each year by preparing students for admission to four-year colleges and universities and offering occupational programs which prepare students for careers in two years or less.

ELAC’s campus opened to the East Los Angeles community in 1948.  The college had previously offered courses and instruction at Garfield High School.
