LOS ANGELES, Calif., May 9, 2008 – The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) Board of Trustees approved Wednesday, May 7, 2008 the selection of Jack E. Daniels III, Ph.D. as President of Los Angeles Southwest College. Dr. Daniels has served as Interim President of the 7,000-student campus since August of 2006.

“President Jack Daniels has done an incredible job of pulling things together at LASC over the last two years,” said Dr. Marshall E. Drummond, Chancellor of the LACCD. “For the first time in my memory, the community, regional stakeholders, faculty, staff and students have an enthusiastic view of the future. I am grateful to have talent such as Jack's on my team.”

With a 30-year career in higher education in four states, Dr. Jack E. Daniels III brings to Southwest College a wealth of expertise in strategic planning, continuous process improvement, business-education partnerships, fundraising and grant procurement, as well as outreach to multicultural communities.

Prior to Southwest College, Dr. Daniels was president of Lincoln Land Community College (Springfield, Ill.) and Central College (Houston, Texas). He also held administrative positions in California (Grossmont College, Peralta Community College District, Contra Costa College) and Florida (Miami-Dade Community College).

Dr. Daniels holds a Ph.D. from the Wright Institute Graduate School of Psychology and a B.A. in History and Education from Huntington College. He is an honorary member of Phi Beta Lambda and Phi Theta Kappa.

“I would like to thank the Board, the Chancellor and Los Angeles Southwest College for having the confidence in me to lead Southwest College into the future,” Dr. Daniels said. “There are many challenges facing our college and I look forward to working with the faculty, staff and the community to insure that we continue to offer quality programs and services.”

Southwest College serves parts of the City of Los Angeles; unincorporated sections of Los Angeles County; the 2nd Supervisorial District; and portions of Gardena, Hawthorne and Inglewood. Thanks to funding by Propositions A/AA, Southwest College is undergoing the largest design/build project of any community college in California. This project has the potential to significantly transform the image of Southwest College both internally and externally, as well as re-introduce its educational capabilities to the community and position it as a model for other community colleges statewide. Southwest College is one of nine colleges comprising the Los Angeles Community College District. The LACCD is one of the largest community college districts in the country and educates more than 110,000 students each year.

The story of Los Angeles Southwest College exemplifies how citizen activism can bring about positive change for the community. Empowered by a new era of civil rights, a group of South Los Angeles residents sought tirelessly to establish an institution of higher learning within their own community. Los Angeles Southwest College opened its doors on Sept. 11, 1967. Today, it serves 7,000 students of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds, with associate degree programs in 34 disciplines and occupational programs in 47 disciplines.
