funding by Propositions A/AA, Southwest College is undergoing
the largest design/build project of any community college
in California. This project has the potential to significantly
transform the image of Southwest College both internally
and externally, as well as re-introduce its educational
capabilities to the community and position it as a model
for other community colleges statewide. Southwest College
is one of nine colleges comprising the Los Angeles Community
College District. The LACCD is one of the largest community
college districts in the country and educates more than
110,000 students each year.

The story of Los Angeles Southwest
College exemplifies how citizen activism can bring about
positive change for the community. Empowered by a new era
of civil rights, a group of South Los Angeles residents
sought tirelessly to establish an institution of higher
learning within their own community. Los Angeles Southwest
College opened its doors on Sept. 11, 1967. Today, it serves
7,000 students of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds,
with associate degree programs in 34 disciplines and occupational
programs in 47 disciplines.
