Dr. Marshall E. (Mark) Drummond,
Chancellor of the Los Angeles Community College District,
is stepping down, effective July 31, 2009.
Dr. Drummond had two years remaining
on his contract, which included a salary exceeding $300,000
a year. A tentative separation agreement has been negotiated
and is expected to become final by the end of July.
Dr. Drummond, 67, first led the
LACCD from 1999 to 2004. He left to become Chancellor of
the California Community Colleges, where
he worked on behalf of the state's 72 college districts,
but returned to the LACCD in July, 2007 to serve as Chancellor
for the second time.
A highlight of Dr. Drummond's
seven years as the LACCD Chancellor was voter approval
of three major bond measures. Overall, the bond measures
have provided $5.7 billion to enable the LACCD to modernize
each of the District's nine colleges, which had fallen
into poor condition after decades with little construction.
"I am proud of my accomplishments
at the LACCD. The District is on a far better footing than
when I first arrived here," Dr Drummond said.
Since last week, Dr. Adriana D.
Barrera, 58, has served as Acting Chancellor and she is
continuing in that role. She most recently has been the
Deputy Chancellor and, just prior to that, was president
of Los Angeles Mission College, an LACCD campus in the
San Fernando Valley.
The LACCD Board of Trustees will
conduct a search for a permanent replacement, but specifics
have not been determined.
