Los Angeles Community College District Chancellor Darroch “Rocky” Young applauds a nearly 25 percent reduction in enrollment fees for students at the nine L.A. community colleges. Tuition fees will decrease to $20 per unit for courses after January 1, 2007.
“Here’s just another reason to take a new look at our community colleges,” Young said. “We have always been a local, supportive and accessible alternative for students who either want a two-year job training certificate or a successful start to a four-year degree. Now we are even more affordable.”
Since 2003, student costs at California community colleges escalated from $11 to $26 per unit, coinciding with a sharp decline in attendance. With the news of a fee reduction, community college enrollment, which has already grown at most colleges this fall, is expected to rebound.
Prospective students are invited to visit lacolleges.net for details on district campuses which offer career training in everything from Aviation Maintenance to becoming a Veterinary Technician. Colleges also offer accredited, general education courses for university transfer.
“A lot of our students are price sensitive,” Young explained. “They don’t want to attend the private schools or other universities. They work during the day and are taking on or two classes in the evenings in order to climb the ladder in their current jobs or change careers entirely.”
“This tuition reduction helps us expand educational opportunities and access throughout our nine campuses,” Young said. “And financial aid is available to further assist with tuition, books and rent – all toward helping our students achieve their goals.”
The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) includes Los Angeles City College, East Los Angeles College, Los Angeles Mission College, Los Angeles Harbor College, Los Angeles Valley College, Southwest College, West Los Angeles College, Pierce College and Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. The LACCD is part of the California Community Colleges, the largest system of higher education in the nation.
