Michael Waxman, President of the Board of Trustees of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) announced his plans to relocate to Washington D.C., and resign from elected office. Mr. Waxman has accepted a position as Vice President of Hyde Park Communications, a Washington D.C. based public affairs firm.

Waxman was first elected to the Board of Trustees in 2001 and re-elected to a second four-year term in July, 2005. “I’m proud of the Board’s accomplishments during the years I have served the District,” said Waxman. “Under our leadership, the voters of Los Angeles passed two historic bond measures, totaling more than $2.4 billion, which will dramatically change the face of our campuses. We selected an outstanding chancellor and a number of excellent college presidents; completed a comprehensive strategic plan which will set clear, achievable goals for the future; and worked effectively to ensure that all our students, faculty and staff have the best colleges possible.”

Waxman joins Hyde Park Communications after founding Waxman Consulting, a Los Angeles-based firm that specializes in delivering comprehensive and integrated programs for clients in the areas of public affairs, strategic communications and community relations.

“I’m sorry to be ending my work as a member of the Board of Trustees,” continued Waxman. “However, I look forward to moving back to Washington D.C. with my family and working with Hyde Park Communications, a company that in a space of just a few years, built a highly regarded reputation as a smart, multi-dimensional public affairs firm.”

“We appreciate and thank Mr. Waxman for his years of service and valuable contributions to the LACCD,” said Chancellor Darroch “Rocky” Young. “We will miss Michael and all wish him and his family the best on their move.”

According to LACCD Senior Vice Chancellor Dr. Adriana Barrera, the Board of Trustees will soon announce plans to fill the vacancy created by Mr. Waxman’s resignation. “The Board of Trustees has two options,” she said. “Either hold a special election or appoint someone to fill out the remainder of Mr. Waxman’s term.”

The LACCD’s Board of Trustees has seven elected members and a student trustee. Each member is elected for a four-year term and serves the entire district.
