The Taxpayer
Relief Act was passed by the United States Congress in the
Fall of 1997. There are two tax credits that may be available
to you if you pay higher education costs:
These tax credits reduce the amount of income tax you may
have to pay. Unlike a deduction, which reduces the amount
of income subject to tax, a credit directly reduces the
tax itself. However, you cannot get a refund for any
part of the credit that is more than your tax.
