MEET THE INTERIM CHANCELLOR
Dr. Tyree Wieder

 

Dr. Tyree WiederDr. Tyree Wieder was named Interim Chancellor of the Los Angeles Community College District by the Board of Trustees in August, 2009.  Dr. Wieder had served as president of Los Angeles Valley College for 14 years until retiring in the summer of 2008. Upon her retirement from Valley College, the District's Board of Trustees bestowed the title of President Emeritus on Dr. Wieder.

Dr. Wieder, 62, is a California native who was raised in South Los Angeles. She began her college studies at Compton Community College. Later she earned bachelor's and master’s degrees from Cal State Northridge, and then a doctoral degree in higher education administration from UCLA. She also participated in the Harvard Institute of Educational Management.

She is president of the Board of Library Commissioners of the Los Angeles Public Library. That board oversees the 72 public libraries in the city of Los Angeles. She also serves on Community Advisory Board for Compton College and the Library Foundation of Los Angeles.

Dr. Wieder's career in education includes serving as a counselor at Moorpark College and dean of student services at Los Angeles Mission College, where she later was appointed dean of academic affairs. She served as director of LACCD educational programs before joining Valley College as vice president of academic affairs in 1990, and later becoming the campus' president.

Her community involvement includes serving on the board of directors of the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley, Project GRAD, and the Valley Industry & Commerce Association. Dr. Wieder also served on the Presidents’ Joint Commission on Los Angeles Unified School District Governance.

In addition, she has served on the advisory board for the Auto Club of Southern California, as chairperson of the board of directors for Northridge Hospital Medical Center, and as a member of the board of directors for Catholic Healthcare West. Dr. Wieder also served on the California Community College Chief Executive Officers board of directors and as a member of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Community Forum.

Dr. Wieder has received numerous awards for her civic work. These include: Harlan Ballin Community Service Award from the Valley Industry and Commerce Association (2008); the Champion of Education Award from the Economic Alliance (2008); the Heart Award from the Child Card Resource Center (2008); Woman in Action Award from the Los Angeles African American Women’s Public Policy Institute (2008); Pioneer Woman by the City of Los Angeles (2004); the Richard Alarcon Community Award (2002); recognition by the San Fernando Valley Business Journal as one of the “Women Who Mean Business” and one of the Valley’s 25 most influential business leaders.

Dr. Wieder will not be a candidate for the permanent Chancellor position. A search committee will be formed to select a new Chancellor by early 2010.
