Background and Description of
the BASICS Program:
BASICS is designed to
help instructors and counselors improve instruction through
the infusion of career building strategies
into vocational programs. It will
provide tools for students to assess career options, market themselves effectively,
transfer skills to different work environments, network with colleagues, and
perform other activities that will help them advance in their chosen careers.
The project is supported through Funds for Instructional Improvement.
BASICS was
developed in response to the new work models, similar to
those of the Entertainment Industry: Work is project-based
and team-oriented; career
paths are dynamic and not easily discernable. To thrive in this environment,
workers need more than technical skills. They need career building strategies.
Our District’s nine colleges are doing an excellent job in providing
students with technical training but there is a limited offering of courses,
which cover career strategies necessary for success in the new workplace
environment. Successful professionals apply career building strategies on
an ongoing basis
and in a manner targeted to their particular professional field.
Vocational instructors and counselors
from East Los Angeles College, Los Angeles Harbor College,
Los Angeles Mission College, Los Angeles Valley College,
West
Los Angeles College.
Ultimately, it is envisioned to be expanded throughout the whole District
and to target academic programs as well.
An advisory committee consisting of 1 instructor and
1 counselor from each participating college, along with industry representatives
will collaborate
on the development of the BASICS Guide. It will contain a comprehensive list
of career strategies and methods for delivery by faculty to students.
The BASICS guide will be distributed to instructors, and professional development
will be provided. The guide and related tools and materials will be posted
on line. Career strategies will be integrated into at least 12 classes at each
participating college by the end of the first project year.
At least 4 discipline-specific programs will be developed and implemented
by the end of the first project year.
The duration of the project is 9/12/2001-9/11/2002.
Additional funding will be explored from a variety of sources.
