B. COLLEGE SERVICE AREA POPULATION
CHARACTERISTICS
This report section contains a delineation and analysis of the College Service Area population
characteristics. These characteristics include demographic information such as population size and
growth trends, ages, population density, income, place of birth, language proficiency, ethnicity,
housing, and other such key factors. The Exhibits contain 2000 U.S. Census data projected to the
year 2005 and estimated to 2010.
In addition, relevant psychographic data is compiled and
presented by Zip Code. This information is useful in understanding the size of the potential student
pool, forecasting future college demand, understanding the types of classes that should be offered,
and potentially targeting certain residents for donations. Other benefits include knowledge useful in
assessing the potential for profit-making fee-based courses. Principle data sources are derived from

Claritas, Inc. Household Characteristics Definitions
a.
Householder
One person in each household is designated as the householder. In
most cases, this is the person, or
one of the people, in whose name the home is owned, being bought, or rented.
If there is no such
person in the household, any adult household member 15 years old and older
could be designated as
the householder.
b.
Household
Income
Household income includes income earned by all persons age 15 years and older
living together in a
housing unit (i.e., all household members). The 2002 estimates continue to build
from the 1990
census income starting point, but as converted to 2000 census geography.
While the income
estimates themselves still trace to the 1990 starting point, the estimated household
income
distributions sum to household estimates built from the Census 2000 household
counts
