CHARACTERISTICS
This report section presents information with regard to the characteristics of the college’s service area
resident employment base. The information includes degrees of participation in the labor force,
employment by industry, by occupation, by work category, and class of worker. In addition, means of
travel and time frames to work by the resident labor force are also provided. This data has a
multitude of uses such as understanding the labor force characteristics and supply conditions. This
information helps delineate this potential target market for college training purposes. The base data
is provided by Claritas, Inc.

Employment Characteristics Definitions
a.
Class of Worker
The information on class of worker
refers to the same job as a respondent’s industry and occupation
and categorizes persons according to the type of ownership of the employing organization.
b.
Labor Force
Labor force is defined as members of the Armed Forces, employed
persons, or those looking for
employment. The “Not in Labor Force” category includes all persons 16-and-older
who are not
employed or looking for employment.
c.
Industry
Information on industry relates to the kind of business conducted
by a person’s employing
organization.
d.
Occupation
Occupation describes the kind of work the person does on the
job. The occupational classification
consists of 500 specific occupational categories for employed persons arranged
into 6 summary level
and 13 occupational groups.
